This wonderful compilation of daily extracts from the HARVARD CLASSICS is like a vitamin pill for the mind. If faithfully followed, this set will enable a dedicated reader to sample and experience many of the world's greatest works, all selected from the iconic 1909 set of the HARVARD CLASSICS.At one time a person was not considered truly educated if he or she were not familiar with these notable authors and their works. Today, sadly, they are often considered too difficult or (worse yet) irrelevant. I also fear a book like this may be dismissed out-of-hand by some claiming it is a male-dominated compilation that does not reflect current standards of socio-political-correctness and multi-cultural diversity; if so, the loss is theirs. These works were written by especially brilliant, insightful, and highly articulate PEOPLE, and their words are no less impactful today than when they were originally written -- but only to those who will take the initiative to read them with open, eager, unbiased, and receptive minds. Before the daily readings, which constitute the bulk and heart of this book, there are numerous introductory chapters explaining the content and benefits of reading the HARVARD CLASSICS. Whoever wrote these portions of this book (Dr. Charles W. Eliot, the original editor of the HARVARD CLASSICS? Amanda Kennedy, the current editor of this ebook? Or both?) comes across as being a tad overly zealous. As truly great as these works are, reading a prescribed set of books (or judicious selections from them) is not, ipso facto, a universal antidote to ignorance, and as much as I admire and enjoy these works, I do find this level of boosterism -- intended to be motivational, I suspect -- more appropriate to the huckster than to the academician. We don't need to be oversold on the value of reading all, or parts of, the HARVARD CLASSICS. Another quibble I have is the lack of an author index, which would also have been useful (and appreciated by this reader), as would (occasionally) more bibliographic information. (Who translated that portion of Dante's DIVINE COMEDY or Homer's ODYSSEY I just read?) In general, though, the book is quite fine, and I am VERY pleased with it.This is a lengthy book of 62,914 Kindle location numbers, and a detailed, active TOC lists and permits direct access to specific content. The reading plan contained herein was developed by Dr. Eliot and, like the multi-volume SHELF OF FICTION, was a later addition to the original HARVARD CLASSICS collection of 1909. In her "Editor's Note," current editor Amanda Kennedy (whose academic credentials are not provided) explains: "Using Dr. Eliot's reading guide I have reproduced the intended readings using my best judgement (sic), occasionally adding or omitting lines and paragraphs with discretion in order to produce a complete and coherent section of text." Begging the issue as to whether Kennedy's judgment was superior to Dr. Eliot's in this regard, I cannot find any significant fault with what she has accomplished compiling this delightful book. Overall, even apart from its connection to the HARVARD CLASSICS, this is a fine (if arguably, thematically unfocused) anthology in its own right, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to meet, enjoy, and be challenged by, some great minds of the past.Virtually every MAJOR work contained within the HARVARD CLASSICS is available individually in a free public domain version, but it MAY not always be the exact same edition or the same translation, and it WILL lack the accompanying introduction and other supplemental material unique to the HARVARD CLASSICS version. To get the real thing, a nicely-formatted ebook edition of the HARVARD CLASSICS is available in the Kindle Store published by Poor Richards Print Shop. It has the informative footnotes but lacks the SHELF OF FICTION -- and it costs $50.00. That's too rich for my blood. [UPDATE 11/24/17: The price has since been greatly reduced.] Sadly, the Aeterna Press edition for $2.51 is no longer as complete as it once was, so I can no longer recommend it. Incredibly, 10% of its content has been expurgated by the publisher for being "morally bad" from a Roman Catholic perspective. Hopefully, another inexpensive but complete and uncensored version will come along soon. [UPDATE 11/24/17: A slightly imperfect but still very good $.99 edition from Erieann is currently available; it is identical to a $9.99 edition from Golden Deer.]FYI: In the 1950's & '60's the chief competition to the HARVARD CLASSICS was THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE WESTERN WORLD (from Britannica and the University of Chicago) with its unique and fabulous SYNTOPICON (a remarkably comprehensive ideological index permitting a reader to trace the historical development and evolution of mankind's great ideas throughout the entire GBWW). Sadly, the GBWW is NOT available in ebook format, and the two collections (v.1 and v.2) from H&H currently selling in the Kindle Store for $2.99 apiece, and titled THE GREAT BOOKS COLLECTION, are definitely NOT affiliated with the GBWW in any way (though a dishonest blurb makes it seem so), and they are neither a revision nor an update; they are merely two bundles of haphazardly arranged, public domain freebies. They lack not only the SYNTOPICON, but (apart from a title TOC) any sort of index.

When I was in high school our study hall was in the library and we had two sets of these books in hard copy. I used to randomly pick one and read the 'lessons', not following the prescribed sequence. I enjoyed many of the sessions but skipped over many due to my adolescent impetuousness. So when I saw these for this terrific price I lept at the chance to get this electronic version and revisit, and sort of apologise, for my rudeness in walking out on some of the stodgy parts. It is a great way to spend a few minutes of the day and sort of rinse the daily sludge of petty thoughts out of my head. My only complaint is that it is not as easy to search as I might like, too much like a real book! I will survive, however, and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

The title of this work is The Harvard Classics in 365 Days, A Liberal Education for the 21st Century. The "editor" is Amanda Kennedy. She has done an exceptional job putting together this introduction to the Harvard Classics. You can read a selection for every day of the year. Reading portions of the classics this way is an excellent method. It allows you to find selections you want to read more of.Priced very cheaply at $1.59, this is a fantastic gateway into The Harvard Classics. Ms. Kennedy did a great job compiling this text for the Kindle. I'm enjoying a "daily read" from different sections of the Harvard Classics.

I love this book. I have had it for over a month now, and I religiously read the day's selection every night. I have wanted to read many of the works in the Harvard Classics but have not had the time. Now I am at least becoming familiar with some of the books I might never have read. I only wish there were a little more of an introduction to each piece. I find myself looking up many of the selections--the authors and the works--after I read them.

Please note that page numbers in the daily entries in the e-book given for the source text in the Harvard Classics may not match your copy of the original Harvard Classics. For example, today's entry, February 22nd, cites Burns' "Ode for General Washinton's Birthday" and gives the page numbers as Vol. 6, pp. 492-494. In my 1909, red-backed edition of the Classics, the Volume is correct, but the pages are 526-527. I was able to use the Harvard Classics excellent index to find the entry in my book. This is a minor annoyance for someone who, like me, would prefer to read the entry in the original work. I say minor because the entire day's reading is given in the e-book itself. The page numbers appear to match the "Harvard Classics Reading Guide" published in 1930.

I am very happy to have found this book as it has the entire one-year reading plan in a single volume that is stored on my kindle e-reader. I haven't seen any major discrepancies between this and the print edition and anything that does come up I can easily check against the original.

I like the actual material but it is terrible trying to move from place to place in the book in the Kindle format. I have given up on it and will by it in actual book form so I can go to any page quickly.

Sure, you could argue that some of the selections are dated. But all are worth reading. Skim it, dabble in it or read it through day by day for a year. It's quick and rich. Enjoy. Discover works you may have only ever (or never) have heard of.
