When I learned in school about the rise and fall of Rome (or Egypt, or the British Empire, or any so-called civilization), there was never a credible explanation for these drastic shifts in fortunes. The history that I learned was a disconnected series of dates and nations, kings and wars. The accompanying upheavals, the extremes of wealth and poverty and suffering, the real conditions of the masses of people were glossed over as mere incidentals. This book has given meaning and understanding to the entire breadth of human history, the changes in the conditions of humanity brought on by everything from stone tools, iron, or agriculture, to money, capitalism, and industry. It highlights the strivings of people from all cultures to better their lives, and to seek justice in the face of tyranny and oppression, ingredients necessitated by disparities in material wealth. The book gives context and meaning to the dates, nations, and wars that were the bare bones of my education. If there were moments of oversimplification, they're no doubt the result of the effort to cover so much in one book, and to compensate for the deficiencies of our mainstream education. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to understand how we got where we are today.

I'm not finished yet, but so far (about 200 pages) it's amazing. Problem is, covering the entire history of the world forces you to go over a few things only briefly, so I've found myself doing a lot of side reading when I come to something I want to know more about. Definitely the outline of our history that I was looking for though.

I have a love / hate relationship with this book because the ideas and themes are pretty strong and informative but historical lines are blurred or completely anhilated multiple times that it almost ruins the book. Chris Harman seems to take pleasure in drumming up as many possible examples as he can but historical accuracy diminishes greatly either because he lacked the drive for extensive research or he was extremely tainted in his views. One example regarding Taiping Rebellion mentions the policy ambitions of Hong's cousin, who Harman can't even bother to name. The cousin is cited for pushing to modernize China through "opening of banks, building of railways and steamships, promotion of mining, and encouragement of science and technology (pg. 361)." The argument Harman makes is that liberating forces existed within the Taiping rebellion but were too late and oppressed by the Qing with help from the British and French, while trying to emphasize that China was thrown backwards and purposefully oppressed. The issues here are many...not least of which has to do with the fact that Harman completely disregards the highly militaristic rule and oppression within the Taiping rebellion. While he does mention the rebellions lost initial motives, he glosses over them as if they were primary and that totalitarian rule wasn't the entire focus. Yes there were favorable policy views but there were more to do with Hong's view that he was the brother of Jesus and his conversion to Christianity.I could go on and on but it's clear Harman took ample liberties in stretching his lens around almost any fleeting example he could find. My opinion is that this example could've been left out quite easily and the chapter would not have suffered. In fact, the book does a great job with some examples and I did enjoy the read overall but I don't like having to parse out truth and tales especially with such an encompassing topic as world history. I would probably recommend trying to find another book if you can but if you have a critical mind and strong history base, you can call BS as you read.

Harman describes how the Agricultural Revolution enhanced people's adaptive capabilities but at a price. It introduced bureaucracy, a necessary innovation to deal with complexities introduced by the division of labor in society. Tribal connectivity gave way to management and ultimately to elitism. The history of empires, of feudalism in Europe, and finally the development of modern global society reflect the poisonous effects of pragmatism at the expense of community solidarity. Harman shows us how a thin thread, however, growing gradually more substantial since the Middle Ages, and significantly so during the French Revolution, testifies to humans' stumbling drive to reverse this anomaly. He provides, therefore, a useful focus for activism in our age. Less upon accomplishing specific political goals than upon learning how to build complex community, including needed bureaucracy, without sacrificing the core survival attribute of our species: our drive to connect. Elites inevitably seek to disrupt this drive, but so do our own individual tendencies to sacrifice happiness for short term gains. In the Marxist tradition, Harman calls upon his readers consciously to come to terms with our own irrationality, and consciously to reject elitism in order to promote our own survival. What makes us happy is indeed most adaptive.

Great work. Interesting perspectives on the development of slavery/racism versus racism/slavery. Not fully cognizant of the historical development of fascism in Europe. (I see some parallels to the modern American political situation.)As to be expected, the early history of the world was a little abstract. There were several instances when it loses focus and me as a reader. These are regained, however, with further reading.

Incredibly important read. I recommend it to anyone not aware of the "other side" of history, that of events and great men. Harman approaches the topic not only from the standpoint of the common classes, but discusses the forces that shaped events and the motivations of the participant groups and individuals. There's much to think about here.
