About the Author

Craig Grossi is an eight-year Marine Corps veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. After returning from Afghanistan, he worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency and attended Georgetown University. When not travelling with Fred, he works intensively with veteran organizations, including the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program and the Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors (TAPS). I read a brief note about this book somewhere and decided to give it a read knowing it is suggested for young people. I am 77 years young, laughed, cried and just loved the book. Excellent, clean read for any age animal lover.

I bought both the children's and adult versions of the book because I have a daughter in 6th grade who follows Craig and Fred on social media, and I'll admit, she got me hooked into his story as well! Wow, what to to say... this is such a beautiful, moving, and hopeful story that feels so needed in today's climate. The description Amazon provides is very accurate, but I figured I would write a review for the young readers' version because parents might be wondering what the difference is from the adult version. As far as I can tell, it is the exact same story, however any profanity has been taken out and the children's version also moves chronologically in time, while the adult version jumps between two different points (one chapter will be Craig's deployment in Afghanistan, and the next Stateside during a roadtrip he took with a fellow Marine). So I suppose it's the difference between a PG and PG-13 film, more or less. The writing is straightforward and has a good sense of humor, you feel like you know Craig very well from page one. Really, this is a loving and hopeful story that just about anyone would enjoy!

November 21, 2017 – Started ReadingReview My mom recommended this book for my classroom after seeing the author on a morning show of some sort. The minute she told me about it I bought it because I have a little boy in my classroom who I thought would love it and now that I've read it (to make sure it is appropriate for 4th graders) I would wholeheartedly expect him to tear through it.Mr. Grossi writes about his experiences serving in the Marines as an intelligence officer. While stationed in a combat zone he finds a dog. Well, I guess the dog finds him. The friendly pooch makes himself at home and endears himself to all of those he meets. Mr. Grossi explains how they weren't supposed to grow attached to the mutts that were frequently seen around Afghanistan and how he could have been thrown in the brig when he decided to bring him back to Camp Leatherneck to try to get him sent stateside. Throughout the book he talks about his military experience, how his relationship with Fred was beneficial during deployment, but how it really helped him after her retired from military service. I really appreciate the post-deployment section as it talks about how relationships and acknowledging ones feelings help the healing process. He also shows how returning to civilian life is tough, even in unexpected ways.I would highly suggest this book for 4th grade or higher classrooms and for kiddos interested in military or dog stories

I read this book along with my son who was assigned it for summer reading. It was immediately engaging. I felt a bond with the author. Not only does my son attend the same schools that Craig did here in Virginia, but my son-in-law was deployed to the same regions in Afghanistan as a dog handler. When he returned from his tour, he had the same experience with bad dreams, and would jump at any loud noise. Thankfully, time and fellow marines seem to help heal most wounds. He is also from a small town outside of Pittsburgh like Justin, and until this past season, we Caps fans had to tolerate his Penguin jabs. But, most importantly, we have a small white dog with a goofy smile who spins, dances and races through the house when we come home. Thanks, Craig for sharing your story with us and thanks for your service to our country.

As a Marine and combat veteran (OIF) I always enjoy reading about the bravery and resourcefulness of our young men and women. There are plenty of books that will discuss tactics and COIN or particular battles...but Grossi’s story of the Recon patrol coming under fire and the extraction of a wounded Marine is gutwrentching and as real as it gets. It also highlights the bravery of the guys flying in on those nine-lines...This may be a book about saving Fred, but I also consider it a spot-on story about my gerneration and the sacrifices we made during these last 15 years or so...you gotta buy it and read it

Amazing read! I personally read the adult version (and loved every second of it) but bought this one for my 8 year old son. It was the first chapter book that he would NOT put down. It went everywhere with us for 4 days as he read it. He loved the story of Craig and Fred. It was also helpful in understanding some of what his father when through during deployments. My husband is also a former Marine. This story lead to great discussions between the two. This story captures your heart and wants you to keep reading. Craig does an amazing job of sharing his story! A must read for all!

Craig took us to Afghanistan through the mud the sand and the bullets! Then there was a sweet little dog that fell in love with Craig he said OK bud it’s now or never! He and his team smuggled Fred on board a helicopter and off they flew to another base. Meanwhile knowing full well That they all could be in a lot of trouble with the military! Very well written brings you to emotions and tears and most of all the comfort of love! Do not miss reading the best book it’s a keeper!

Wonderful easy reading of a true love and respect from Craig to Fred and Fred to Craig.. Had a school function wit bothCraig and Fred, the students loved the stories from Craig and to meet Fred. A wonderful morning discussing the book and meeting the author and Fred.
